Snotrocket has now included this functionality as a tooltip of warboard_coin (part of the core). But if you still want it on the main bar (not as a tooltip) then this is a solution.

Just a simple little item/bag space counter. When clicked opens you bags.

First LUA /mod ever ... it works well enough for me. But feel free to leave your problems and suggestions.
