Yabber's 'plain' style allows you to do away with the big bubbles and instead just display text above player heads. You can also change the color of text (you can change the text color for regular bubbles too, if you prefer).

Note: The white text at the top of the image is the actual chat, not something that was added with an image editor.

Yabber can set the scaling of chat bubbles so that they're only as big as you want them to be.
